What Did You Do With Your Stimulus Check?

2008 Economic Stimulus PaymentMonths ago, when I first heard about plans for an economic stimulus payment that would go to all taxpaying Americans, I could not help but think of how political leaders in ancient Rome would offer free Bread and Circuses as a way of tricking Roman citizens into giving up their political freedoms. The people would remain fat and happy while the elite would make plans to send them off to fight wars of conquest, for the glory of Rome.

I can't help but think of the war in Iraq as "the circus," and the economic stimulus payments as "the bread." Of course, we don't even have to leave our homes to enjoy the circus these days. Just turn on the TV and the images are delivered to you free of charge, thoroughly sanitized and censored, of course.

I wonder if anybody turned down the stimulus payment. After all, the money is basically a loan from China to the American people, a loan that our grandkids will have to payoff. There must be at least some Americans who find this objectionable.

So, what did you do with your stimulus check? Me? The $600 I received didn't even cover my child support payment, but I was grateful for the assistance. Your comments are welcome.

While I had great plans for my stimulus checks, it wound up going to pay off part my of my father's final arrangements. And I was glad to have it.

There was an OpEd yesterday about how people who died after the tax year still got checks. He was complaining that taxpayers shouldn't have to spend money for that, but what he failed to realize is whether the dead person gets it or the family does, it still gets put back into the economy. Usually in the form of paying off final expenses.

Yep, I agree completely. The money will certainly get pumped back into the economy in one way or another.

I reinvested half of it into my blogging business and put the other half towards paying down credit card debt.

That's great. I was thinking about using some of the free cash to pay down some of my business credit card debt, but I decided against it since my cash situation isn't very good and I'm still enjoying 0% APR.

I wouldn't be surprised if the government gives us another stimulus payment at some point, especially if the Democrats take the White House.

I sent it back... Don't agree with the concept and the way they did this one. It's a loan, not a payment, you have to pay it back soon...

@Don: You don't have to pay it back.

Cool. Must be an older car. Hope you have enough saved up for service and parts.

When you do take it in for service, you can at least be secure in the fact that you have done your part to help the American economy (since Volvo is owned by Ford Motor.)

Your perspective on the economic stimulus is one that more people should consider.

Pretty deep...

I didn't turn the money down, either! We paid some bills, got some necessities, and enjoyed some good food.

But for a family of five, that's about all that could be done with that little bit of money. It didn't stimulate a whole lot, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
